Unfortunately, as of around March of 2007 it was noticed that the GNIS file format has been changed yet again to one that Xastir can't parse, and this new format is missing critical information (such as estimated population density of populated places) that Xastir used in the old format to choose whether to display that data at a particular zoom level. At this writing (April 2007) we have no work-around to get newer GNIS files usable in xastir.
